Low volatile monofunctional reactive diluents for radiation curable formulations

In the last decades importance of UV curable formulations has increased continuously. Their fast curing speed, solvent-free polymerization conditions, and formation hard highly crosslinked photopolymer networks represent major benefits. Commercial resins generally consist multi-functional vinyl oligomers, photoinitiators, additives, reactive diluents. Mono- diluents serve as thinners to lower overall resin viscosity improve processability. However, many monofunctional like isobornyl (meth)acrylate or benzyl exhibit high volatility, often already at room temperature. This causes adverse effects such unpleasant odor, potential health risks, changing composition during processing. A new group monomers that show for replacing traditional volatile are salicylate (meth)acrylates. this work, salicylate-based synthesized, polymerized, characterized with respect their viscosity, thermal stability, photoreactivity, thermomechanical properties homopolymers. Additionally, a first example diluting effect in viscous difunctional polyester urethane methacrylate is demonstrated 30 wt% cycloaliphatically an aromatically substituted methacrylate. The polymers diluted similarly glass transition temperatures 110 126 °C, which range undiluted resin.
